Luis Torres 

Luís Torres began his journey in photography at the age of 18, when he borrowed his first camera from an uncle. With no formal training and no one close at hand to learn from, he taught himself, supplementing this with a correspondence course in photography.

His desire to learn led him to set up his own black-and-white darkroom, at a time when all the materials had to be bought in Lisbon. Developing film, making enlargements and understanding the language of photography were skills built up over many years, always marked by persistence and curiosity.

Along the way, he sought out the work of other photographers in Portugal and abroad, through magazines, books and exhibitions. But it was above all through constant practice and the ability to look critically at his own work that he found his way of growing as a photographer whose career now spans half a century.
